Retirement community with New Year’s spirit: Cedar on Collins supports Sky Show

Kiama’s iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks are a significant step closer to returning, with the community already raising more than $62,000 towards the $100,000 needed to stage this year’s event. The fundraising campaign, led by Destination Kiama and spearheaded by councillor Matt Brown, has attracted strong backing from local businesses, community organisations and individuals determined to see one of the town’s most cherished traditions continue. Mr Brown said the response had been overwhelming, with residents and businesses recognising just how important the fireworks are to Kiama. “This isn’t just about a fireworks display,” he said. “It’s about bringing our community together and supporting local businesses. Every New Year’s Eve thousands of people come into Kiama to celebrate, filling restaurants, cafes, accommodation and local shops. The benefits flow right through the community.” The annual fireworks have become one of Kiama’s signature events, attracting an estimated 20,000 people and creating one of the busiest trading days of the year for many local businesses.

Last year’s cancellation left residents, visitors and businesses disappointed, with many families having already booked accommodation expecting the traditional celebration. Major supporters to date include Kiama Council ($20,000), Kiama Business Network ($10,000), Cedar on Collins ($10,000), One Fitness ($5,000), The Sebel Kiama ($5,000), South Break Media ($5,000), Saltwater Cafe ($1,000), Tiny Tins ($1,000), Elite Energy ($2,000) and an anonymous donation. Cedar on Collins Retirement Community Manager Laura Hooper said supporting the campaign was an easy decision. “Community connection is one of our core values,” she said. “Our residents love watching the fireworks from our rooftop each New Year’s Eve, but it’s much bigger than that. It’s an event that brings the whole community together, and we’re proud to help make it happen.” Saltwater Cafe owner Gulcin Topel said local businesses understood just how valuable the event is for the town.

“When the fireworks aren’t on, the town is much quieter,” she said. “It affects everyone and Kiama deserves a celebration. Every little bit raised makes a difference.” Mr Brown said while the campaign had made tremendous progress, there was still work to do before the fundraising target was reached. “We’ve had fantastic support from our major sponsors and from individuals making smaller donations,” he said. “Now we’re asking everyone in the community to get behind it. Every contribution helps us get closer to bringing the fireworks back.” Organisers are continuing to seek support from businesses, community groups and residents over the coming weeks, with further sponsorship announcements expected as the campaign gathers momentum.

The Bugle will continue to publish fundraising updates and recognise new sponsors as Kiama works together to ensure its iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks return this year.
